Types of Well Drilling in Ann Arbor

You do not need to make the choice as to which type of well will fit your needs.  Michigan does allow property owners to drill wells, but it is an involved process. At the end of the day, we always recommend choosing a local contractor for well drilling Ann Arbor.

Wells we have drilled in Ann Arbor range anywhere from 30 feet feet to 500 feet deep.  Usually, a residential well we drill for you will be less than 200 feet deep. Commercial water wells often need to be deeper because only deeper wells are able to support the high water demands of farms, factories, and other similar industrial applications.

The type of well needed depends on the geology of the underlying rocks and where the water is located.  Once we figure out these factors, we can engineer the well to your specifications.  Each area of Michigan differs in geology, so different methods of drilling are required as well as different types of wells. These all depend on your needs and location details.  Read below for a brief overview. Our well drillers are familiar with the most modern techniques.

Drilled Wells

Drilled wells are the most common well we build all throughout Michigan.  They are common for a few good reasons. They can supply a high flow rate and last 25-30 years.

Drilled wells are the safest when it comes to clean drinking water.  This type of well averages between 130-140 ft deep so it is not exposed to any surface contaminants.  They are drilled with a diameter of 4-5 inches.  We line these wells with either Steel or PVC plastic, both of which are durable enough for use in wells.

These wells are drilled with a mobile drilling rig, like the kind you probably have seen on the back of one of our trucks! While there are different drilling methods we use, the ending well design is always very similar.

Driven Wells

Driven wells are actually common in Michigan.  They are usually found close to rivers and lakes, because groundwater is closer to the surface in those areas. Instead of using a giant drill to create the hole, the casing and well point pushed (driven) into the ground with force.  Since these wells don’t need to be deep, driving the pipe into the ground works great!

As a result, these types of wells are much less expensive than drilled wells. Heavy drilling equipment, like the kind on a truck, isn’t required to build a driven well. But, a driven well won’t always suit the terrain. If the soil is very rocky, it can be very difficult or impossible to finish the driven well.

The key takeaway is that while driven wells are a very cost-effective option, they aren’t always possible to build.  The conditions have to be right for us to be able to build you a driven well.
